“Your pet is causing problems again, Alef,” Vav said in an irritated tone. “The other members of the Council don’t agree with the relaxed attitude you’ve been taking with him.” Alef said nothing as he stared across the room at the massive door that led into the Council chambers, his hands clasped in front of his mouth.

Vav continued, “The Council has decided unanimously that should Kai and his squad cause any more problems for us like they have on their last two missions, we will have a contract placed on each member. We cannot risk exposure like we did in Stockholm or like we did last night.”

Still, Alef said nothing.

Gimel spoke up next. “We have not been exposed since the slaughter at Masada over two-thousand years ago and we won’t let it happen again.” After a long pause, Alef straightened his posture and faced the other members of the High Council.

“Where is Jehoel?” he asked calmly.

“Jehoel is laying low, as she has been for quite some time,” responded Gimel.

“Have you told her about your decision?”

“It’s irrelevant,” said He.

There was another long pause before Vav spoke up again.

“We know that Kai retrieved something from Gilroy before the latter’s death, Alef.”

When questioned, Murimoto stated that Kai had asked him about the phrase “ruins of old joy”, but there was nothing else.”

“We must find the information that was exchanged in any way we can,” Gimel said, frustrated. “We must not let this get out of hand.” With that, Alef stood up out of his throne behind the elevated, crescent-shaped table. His slightly wrinkled hands were shaking, unbeknownst to his fellow Council members. He quickly but carefully pulled out his pipe so as not to raise suspicion of his condition, lit the dark herbs inside it, and inhaled as he normally did. His hands shook less now, and he set down his ornate wooden pipe on the equally as ornate wooden table and pressed a white button protruding from its underbelly. Almost as quickly as he had pressed the button, Verena walked in through the doors on the other side of the room. Gently, the hooded Sofia raised her head and looked at Verena, who made eye contact with Sofia and shuddered ever so slightly with fear. Sofia put her head back down and assumed her unmoving position leaning up against the wall to the right of the High Council table from the entrance. Being the only member of the High Council standing, Verena addressed Alef directly.

“How can I assist you, Your Excellency?”

“Summon Seraphiel immediately.” Alef said without a pause.

“Right away, sir.” Verena quickly turned around and left the room. The other Council members stared at Alef, save Dalet who was absent from this meeting,
